The volume of information that today’s medical student needs to know is staggering and growing rapidly because of new basic research and clinical discoveries. The critical need for medical students on clinical clerkships is to have easy access to relevant information in a concise and carefully organized manner. This goal is difficult to achieve because 21st century medicine is characterized by a vast quantity of clinically relevant information. The goal of this textbook is to concisely present the essential information in obstetrics and gynecology so that medical students can understand a practical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of real patients.
Women’s health and the field of obstetrics and gynecology are critically important to the overall health of every human society. The health of women and their newborn children are key determinants of the potential of a society. The Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics have developed consensus learning objectives for medical students on clinical rotations in obstetrics and gynecology. These objectives, modified to focus on the most important and common clinical problems, are the basis for the material presented in this book.
Each chapter is presented in a consistent manner with care taken to emphasize key clinical points and to best use tables and figures to present critical data and ideas. Each chapter is organized to clearly outline how practicing doctors typically approach the diagnosis and treatment of real patient problems. Within most chapters, a summary of “The Best Evidence” is provided to alert students to the highest quality research information that guides clinical diagnosis and treatment. “The Best
Evidence” focuses on the key clinical trials that inform the modern practice of medicine.
Medical students don’t learn by a bolus infusion of a massive quantity of information. Students learn through a continuous cycle of reading, thinking, talking and doing. The purpose of this text is to help prepare the student for this constant cycle of life-long learning.
